How the 5 Senses Impact How We Learn
February 19th, 2018The 5 Senses Impact on How We Learn
How we learn, how we intake information directly impacts our ability to succeed in school. Parents frequently email me or call my office looking for help for their child or teen. They don’t know why their child struggles in school. They just know that they do. Reading is hard. Writing is hard. Spelling is hard. Math is hard. Why is is so difficult? Are your kids just lazy? Are the learning problems caused by ADHD?
The Foundation of How We Learn
I always go back to the foundation of learning to get an understanding of what is going on. Whether you have dyslexia, a learning disability, dyscalculia, or are gifted and take to long to do your homework, we all take in information through the senses. Getting back to the basic operating system of how we take in information leads us to understand why learning becomes difficult as well as what you can do to ultimately make learning easier.
Watch the video for more information on how we learn and what can interfere with learning. Once you understand what is going on, there is so much that can be done to make learning easier.
27 Areas of Perception Impact How We Learn
Sometimes just a few areas of perception not working as well as they could, should and can. This can make it difficult to read, write, or spell with ease. Once the areas are addressed, learning becomes easier. These areas are learned skills and can improve which then improves how we learn.
For example, if you skip, repeat, or mispronounce words when you read, comprehension goes down. Skipping or repeating words or sentences when you read is typically a problem with visual tracking. This is an area that is relatively easy to improve. One way to help with this is to do quick, 5-minute phonetic reading drills.
Mispronouncing words, on the other hand, is impacted by auditory-visual integration. Again, there are specific activities you can do to improve this skill. The same goes for auditory memory and visual memory skills. All of your students’ areas of perception can improve with simple activities or exercises.
